Staying active
As the weather is getting colder it is important to look after ourselves. In Hazel class we love going out for the daily mile in our coats and Friday afternoon PE lessons. The other way we keep active is by having brain breaks during our lessons. You can sign up for free and create your own account at this site

Our reading program incorporates many different components. Students will be participating in Guided Reading Groups, Whole Group Instruction and Independent Reading.

Every Tuesday and Friday your child will be bringing home an independent book to read. This is a book your child has picked out at their “just right” reading level and is also interesting to your child. Please listen to your child read one of the books of their choosing. Rereading books helps students develop fluency and aid comprehension. Reading comprehension is key to becoming an excellent reader. If the book is a longer chapter book, the child may only read a chapter or so.

Please ask your child questions about the book he/she reads to you. Ideas for questions are on the front of the book bag. Sign, date, and indicate on the Reading Log if the level of the book was right for your child, challenging, or too easy.

Homework is given out on Thursdays and must be brought back into school the following Tuesday for marking. If you ever have any issues with homework or something comes up where homework cannot be completed, please let us know by writing a note.

Literacy: Each week students will be given a spelling list of ten words; we work on these words in class each day. As a part of literacy homework students are required to pick three activities to complete in their literacy books. Students will be tested on these words the following week.

Maths: Each week students will be given a maths sheet to complete at home. All maths tasks are based on whatever we are working on in class and have been explained to the students. Please sign the homework when completed.

We try to go on an excursion every term to enhance students learning. Parents are always welcome to come along to help with supervision; you will need to have a current DBS check with the school (details available at the front office).

When any trip is planned a note will be sent home and include a permission note that will need to be returned to school.

Below are some planned trips; details will be given for these trips closer to the dates.

We have high expectations of your child as a member of Hazel class. As a group we came up with some ‘Hazel class rules’ that we follow at all times.

  1. We make our work neat and tidy
  2. We always have a go and try our best
  3. We treat each other with respect
  4. We work as a team and encourage each other
